FIELD STATION is an action lab studying digital sovereignty and building civic tech, in the open. This is where we'll write down what we're doing as we do it.

We work on the future of work, the reach of technology, and the shape of society. So much of digital life now runs through a small number of huge platforms. We think that's worth questioning out loud, then testing in practice, not just in theory. Our interests sit around digital sovereignty, federated and decentralised technologies, systems thinking, and cooperative ways of organising work. These are different threads with one question running underneath them: what happens if you build things differently, and can other people copy your working?

what happens if you build things differently, and can other people copy your working?

Building in public is in our DNA, so we'll publish the reasoning behind a piece of work alongside the piece of work itself, including the parts that don't land the way we hoped. If a project takes six weeks and produces a page of lessons rather than a product, that page goes up here too.

We're starting small and public. Our first project is a live experiment with people we know, run on infrastructure we don't own, with the results published as they happen rather than tidied up afterwards. More on that soon.

If you want to see the reasoning as well as the results, you're in the right place. Follow along, argue with us in the open, and tell us where we've got it wrong.

Welcome to FIELD STATION.
